3 Modern Bathrooms That Won’t Date

When you renovate, the fear is that you are spending your hard earned money and you are not quite sure what the result will be.

We become indecisive as we want the bathroom to look great but also not date in a year’s time. We at Dream Bathroom Renovations are here to help you with our quick easy guide on the modern bathrooms that won’t date in a year.

  1. The Terrazzo Look Bathrooms
  2. Subway Bathroom
  3. Marble Bathrooms

The Terrazzo Look Bathroom

Real terrazzo is made of quarts of crushed marble and a few different other products to create a stunning finish. The terrazzo look tiles are the modern timeless trend I am referring to that have a seamless look in comparison to real terrazzo.

The grey terrazzo looks incredible with white walls and feels expensive without being overwhelming.

Our Guyra bathroom project below shows you how timeless this style of bathroom can be.

What I love about this bathroom and the tiles themselves is because they are patterned you can hide all the hair it also can be paired with pretty much anything being a cold-tone finish.

These tiles are the Stirling Grey Terrazzo Look Tile from Tile Cloud paired with their matt white Kit Kat tiles.

Subway Bathrooms

Subway bathrooms are exactly as they sound which is the use of smaller tiles laid in a subway or 1/2 Brickbond setup. This style has been around for centuries and paired with a patterned floor like our Inverell Project below or straight colour in the floor you can create a bathroom that won’t date.

An even more modern concept is using the subway tiling but with a contrast grout to create more of a feature.

An example of that is our Armidale ensuite renovation below.

Marble Bathrooms

Marble, or faux marble tiles, will never go out of style. This classic style is timeless. and a style of the bathroom I have been installing for over 20 years.

Our Tenterfield Bathroom Renovation project below shows you how stunning the marble look bathrooms can be.

Using these timeless Calacatta White Polished 597.0mm x 597.0mm from Beaumont Tiles the bathroom only needed some dark cabinetry to set it off beautifully.

The downside can be the heavy pattern might be too distracting for you but the rule of tiles is the more pattern the easier it is to clean.

Shower Shelf V Shower Niche

When it comes to deciding what shelving you are going to place in your shower area you will need to make an important decision.

That decision will most likely be between the shower niche and the shower.

Both have their pros and cons but let me guide you below and let you make your decision.

Shower Niche

A shower niche/box/shelf is a practical and stylish vessel for all your necessities. The reason I have used so many slashes is like all parts of renovations different tradesmen have different names for the same actions.

For this though we shall go with the niche as it sounds cooler.

I love the use of brushed copper in our Armidale bathroom below as the niche is more subtle.

The rising popularity of inbuilt shower recesses is due to a few reasons but the number one is the hatred people have had with rusting shower shelves and the cramped nature of too many items sticking out the wall, Who hasn’t banged their head or elbow on a shower soap dish?,

If you haven’t, consider yourself very fortunate.

What I love about this Armidale bathroom renovation below is our sparky used strip lighting in the niche to make it pop and become more a feature with the Kit Kat tiles.

Shower Ledge

The shower ledge or the wall to wall wall which is exactly as the weird title states is a wall that goes between the shower walls or across the entire bathroom. Becoming more popular than the shower niche both due to its size and ability to be used as a feature you will find the shower ledge the most popular shower shelf going into the 2020s and beyond.

The key with this Glen Inness main bathroom renovation below was getting the shower heads right to work with the height of the ledge required.

The key to getting the heights right and understanding the placement of the items it affects is really crucial and experience-based. Below I’ll give some quick notes to look for when attempting the shower ledge and a link to an alternative to the shower ledge.

These bathrooms we completed in Inverell below took expert tiling to make sure the walls worked perfect in each bathroom.

When it comes to deciding which will work for you remember this, shower niches can only go on external walls or if you have enough room they can go in stud walls.

The wall-to-wall shelf can pretty much go in any shower but will affect space, the shower screen and the height of items.

Pros and Cons Of Wet Room Renovations

The best way I would describe wet room bathroom renovations is when one item of a bathroom is also in the shower area. This item can be the bath, vanity or toilet that shares the shower area. Traditionally these wet rooms can be taken as different meanings such as no shower screen rooms or rooms that have a dry area and a wet area. Below we will cover the pros and cons of wet room set ups.

Martin Bathroom Renovation
Martin Bathroom Renovation

The big plus a wet room is it gives an opportunity to have less glass and much bigger feeling shower. Below is an example of if Inverell bathroom we completed that uses the toilet in the shower area.

Inverell Bathroom Renovations
Inverell Bathroom Renovations

PROS:

  • The wet room will feel so expansive with that frameless glass
  •  Allows for a more efficient use of the space which is often more visually appealing
  • Wet rooms can make small bathrooms appear larger and we all know large bathrooms tend to look more luxurious
Glen Innes Bathroom Renovation 1

 CONS:

  • A wet room design is generally a lot more ‘open plan’ so yes, splashes and steam can go everywhere
  • Waterproofing is a lot more costly and labour intensive
  • Drainage and tiling of the falls is crucial and something you want to be done by a professional
  • There are some restrictions on where electrical can go i.e. power points heated towel rails.
  • It is not the easiest to tile and you need a lot of experience to complete them

Wet rooms renovations, or baths in the shower renovations both being similar or the same thing are becoming more popular over the years. I love them and when we first did them it was a client who had the guts to do it 10 years ago.  It takes years of experience to understand not only how to tile it but to put it together with the right drainage and get the fall. You should really only do these types of renovations with experienced renovators or you will have bigger issues down the track

Glen Innes Bathroom Tiling

Inverell Bathroom Tiling

For this Inverell bathroom tiling below the owner wanted to use a hexagon sheeted tile. These tiles were placed on mesh sheeting which you need to have flat walls for or a lot of prep work. If you are looking for Floor and Wall Tilers in Inverell NSW just ask about this Calacatta Maximus Hexagon bathroom tile that makes the room look stunning and this thing in person was beautiful.

Armidale Bathroom Tiling

What I love about this Armidale bathroom renovation we completed last year was that it kept it simple by using larger tiles. Whenever you do a bathroom tiling in 600mm x 600mm the key is getting enough fall to make your drainage work. It takes skill to get the drainage and it also impact the drain and the shower screen set up you have.

Casino Bathroom Tiling

When you think of bathrooms in 2020’s you think 300mm x 600mm rectified tiles. These rectified tiles in the 300mm x 600mm are the most common tiles we lay in bathrooms. Below is a Casino bathroom renovation we completed that uses this Americano Grey 300mm x 600mm porcelain wall tiles mixed with a handmade subway which is always my favourite to do.

Laundry Renovation Advice

A functional and organised laundry can make a big difference between a dull, boring and time-consuming activities and a smooth running operation.

You deserve a laundry room that will make your work more pleasant . An efficient and well-designed laundry can not only function as a utility area but a room you will be pleased for others to see.

Below is some great advice picked up over our last 30 years of renovating laundries that hopefully will help in your next laundry project.

All About The Draws (Practical)

A humble ergonomic revolution swept through houses across the world when drawers started to replace cupboards in the kitchen, and there’s no reason why our laundries can’t be transformed in the same way. It is much easier to open a drawer and quickly locate what you’re looking for than it is to rummage around the back of a dusty cupboard for the fabric softener.

Think Of The Future (Design)

Before you make any laundry design decisions, it’s important to take your lifestyle into consideration. Take the time to consider the inclusions and appliances you want now as well as how your needs may alter in the future.

For example – do you work full-time, with a rapidly expanding schedule? Then you might want to include a drying cupboard or condenser dryer to save precious time. Or maybe you’re planning on a few extra family members in the future, and allowance for a heavy duty washing machines might be necessary. Our advice is to consider and prepare for these things in advance before finalising your laundry design, as the laundry is usually a small space with minimal room for future alterations.

Inverell Laundry Renovation

If There Is Space We Will Fill It (Storage)

Every functional laundry needs adequate storage to house you laundry items, from detergents to washing baskets, and everything in-between. Space permitting, your bench top should be positioned either over laundry bins or over your appliances. This will allow you to easily pull out clothes from the bins or appliances to be seamlessly and immediately sorted on the bench top. If you don’t have a dedicated laundry room, consider installing a pull out benchtop that can serve this purpose.

Don’t make the mistake of not including a combination of versatile storage options, as this is key to a functional laundry design. A mixture of open shelves, cabinets and purpose-built cupboards will keep all of your laundry products within easy reach. Make sure you vary the size of your cupboard too – tall, narrow cupboards can be used to store mops and brooms for example while open shelving should be used to store items that are used on a regular basis. And importantly make sure the shelves in your over head cupboards have adequate clearance height, to store your laundry/cleaning products that are harmful to children or pets

Functional Is King

Irons, mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners… they all need to be stored somewhere and if your laundry is like mine, it is probably used as a domestic dumping ground. Rather than tripping over stray objects or straining your back to lift heavy sporting gear off a high shelf, think about the equipment you keep in your laundry then design your storage needs around that.

Ideally, you’ll have a combination of deep and shallow drawers, tall and short cupboards and plenty of hanging space. But you may also want to include wall-mounted bike hooks, open shelving for small gardening implements, a tall cupboard for spades and tools, space to store large suitcases, or room for the kids’ scooters and kites.
