Are wet rooms a good idea?

Are wet rooms a good idea is something we often get asked. I honestly think wet rooms are a great idea as they both allow you to have a big room and the feeling of a big room. If you are deciding whether a wet room is a good idea you need to ask yourself why you are renovating.

If you are renovating to make your bathroom more practical look at what you need exactly. For example, the advice I give clients who want storage and they have a bath they don’t need is to get rid of the bath.

If you have a bathroom where the shower is cramped then the wet room is perfect for you as the big shower is the number one reason for a wet room.

What is the point of a wet room?

Does this lead us to what is the point of a wet room? So the point of the wet room based on the wet room renovations I have completed is this. A bigger room is the point.

Whether your bathroom looks bigger trust me the shower will be bigger. How does the wet room do this? Well, it does this by moving the vanity to the entrance instantly creating a feeling of space like the example below.

The second aspect of the wet room and the biggest point of the space is that it turns a 900mm x 900mm on average shower into a 1700mm x 1800mm size shower on average. We are talking almost double the size.

Inverell Bathroom Tiling

Do wet rooms get everything wet?

Do wet rooms get everything wet? The part of this renovation I will stress to you is yes everything in the wet room gets wet but the dry room of the space will not.

Often the vanity section is the dry room but it also might contain a toilet in the larger spaces. This dry section will often stay dry unless your wet body stands out if it.

Everything in the wet room area such as the bath and toilet will get wet, how much it gets wet will depend really on how it is put together by your bathroom renovator and how well they are doing it.

Is a wet room worth the added cost?

Are wet rooms worth the added cost? This is all down to the person renovating it and the person buying it. My advice and this is just advice more people will be in love with a freestanding bath in a wet room than a small bricked bath in a traditional family space.

A freestanding bath and less glass to clean with a fixed panel screen is a selling point and actual luxury that will add value to the desirability of selling the home. People remember and want this.

Casino Bathroom Tiling

Is a wet room bathroom expensive?

The biggest cost in wet rooms really is items like the freestanding bath and plumbing work required to make it work so asking if a wet room bathroom is expensive comes down to the person doing the labor costs which are unknown.

Is a wet room bathroom expensive?

In Australia, wet room bathroom renovations are on the trend so the cost comes down as more people understand how to do them. In places like the UK and USA, it is not as common or more complicated due to multiple stories or cold whether it can be more expensive or they flat out avoid it altogether.

What size should a wet room be?

There are a lot of interruptions of a wet room I will focus more on a traditional Australian wet room which is vanity, screen, and bath. When it comes to the all-on-the-same-wall wet room I call it, where all your items are located on one wall the minimum size you need for this wet room is ideally 2500mm Long (Vanity Wall) x 1550mm (Often Window Wall).

Final Thoughts

I am and will always be a big fan of wet room renovations. They are needed for people who have small bathrooms as they give you so many more options. Wet room renovations will be around for years to come and I hope in any small way I have helped you along the way with your next wet room bathroom renovation.

5 Mistakes To Avoid When Bathroom Renovating

First things first I would like to say renovating your bathroom or bathrooms is a big investment in your property. The word that is key to that is “investment”. So it’s important to treat this like any other investment not to make a mistake and ensure you make informed and responsible decisions,

I’m talking about both financial and emotional returns here. You want to add value to your home and love the look and feel of your experience.  A professionally designed and fitted-out bathroom renovation can potentially INCREASE the VALUE of your property by far more than the investment of the bathroom renovation alone.

Below are my 5 mistakes to avoid when renovating your bathroom

  1. Waiting To Long
  2. Partial Renovation Is A Waste Of Money
  3. Choosing The Wrong Tradesman
  4. Ask The Right Questions
  5. Choosing On Price Alone

However, getting it wrong, and making some or any of the mistakes detailed below, can potentially end up costing you much more than the money you spent on what you thought would be a wise investment.

The worst part of it is that it’s something you will use and look at every morning of your life and no one wants to wake up mad every day.

Sure, you can’t be expected to know everything there is to know and consider when planning your bathroom renovation. It’s not something you deal with every day but there are traps and pitfalls you must be aware of to help you every stage of the way.

Waiting Too Long To Renovate

This is a mistake we often come across because a bathroom renovation can rightfully be viewed as an expensive investment,

It is quite often put off where problems are patched up or sealed over with the view of prolonging the inevitable.

I understand in an ideal world we would just renovate the whole house when we felt like it but that is not practical.

So when is too long to wait to renovate? Well, I am glad you asked, so a little bit of rising dampness won’t bring down the wall.

It’s not only the localized damage to the walls, framework, and flooring in your bathroom.  It’s the termites that just thrive in a moist environment and spread quickly causing monstrous damage.  Also, mold is a major cause of debilitating allergies and illnesses including asthma, and eye, skin, and lung infections.

Doing The Partial Renovation Or Sealing

My biggest piece of advice when it comes to renovation mistakes is for owners who do partial renovations.

If you are doing it to sell my advice is do not unless it’s something that does not work.

When you renovate a bathroom all you will notice are the items left behind your eyes are drawn to them and they stand out more than ever.

Additionally, never leave any tiles when you renovate a bathroom if you plan to leave a floor or walls it’s almost always a bad idea. No decent bathroom renovation company would ever do a renovation where you keep any tiles on the wall that are existing.

Two reasons really, the first being trying to tile up to someone’s work can be a nightmare to get level or line up.

Secondly and most importantly reason you can not guarantee waterproofing or lift tiles.

An example is if you tile over tiles and the below tiles are drummy the ones above them will suffer the exact same drumming and movement.

Save your money and do not partially renovate if you know in a year’s time you will renovate anyway.

The issue with over the top of tile sealers is, that any movement, using the wrong chemical, or piercing of the grout will cause the leaks to happen again so there is no way to tell how long it will last.

Choosing A Dodgy Tradesman

Bathroom renovation can be attempted as a DIY project but it will take a lot of time, tools, and extensive research and planning. Even with over 30 years of experience every week we find new issues we have never seen before so it can be a daunting task when you do it yourself.

Below is a list of trades and skills your average bathroom renovation will or might need:

  • Electrician
  • Carpenter
  • Plumber
  • Plasterer
  • Waterproofer
  • Tiler
  • Cabinetmaker
  • Glazier
  • Painter
  • Asbestos specialist
  • Stonemasons / concretes/renders
  • And at times others are not listed

Due to the complex nature of bathrooms, many contractors come and go. Often leaving behind a trail of substandard renovations.

Ask The Right Questions

You’ve decided to renovate your bathroom and begun to get a couple of quotes but how do you know who to trust or what to ask.

If you are new to renovating your bathroom below are the important questions to ask any person renovating your bathroom in Australia.

  1. When it comes to waterproofing what is your plan of attack (Expectations is at least 2 or 3 coats above Australian standards)
  2. When did you start this business and what’s your background
  3. How long will the bathroom renovation take roughly?
  4. Will there be any hidden costs once you start the renovation and if they are what am I looking at spending?
  5. What is the payment structure for the job?
  6. Is there a schedule for trades or an expectation

The main questions are about waterproofing and hidden costs with any renovator.

You want to trust and believe you will be treated with respect and honesty not held to ransom by a company that only wants your money so they can move on.

CHOOSING YOUR BATHROOM RENOVATION COMPANY ON PRICE ALONE

Quite often when making a choice that requires significant investment the cost is what people look at. Price is an important consideration it’s the only way to gauge if you are being ripped off so it’s important to look at all factors.

Bathroom renovations are not cheap, it is always hard to explain completely but you have to factor in about 15 different components when it comes to someone giving you a price for a bathroom renovation.

Furthermore, this is why your bathroom will often cost between $15k to $30k as so much goes into covering every aspect of the cost.

Too cheap of a quote you have to ask how long have they been doing it and if they are experienced then they shouldn’t be cheap

You might get lucky and the lower cost is a renovator who undervalues their service or an up-and-coming renovator who is trying to get work it’s about assessing that and making the decision.

Always ask questions regardless of how silly you may think they are as you want to be happy at the end and that small questions might result in a big difference at the end.

For this Grafton bathroom renovation below the client really wanted a wall hung vanity but thought it would be too hard to install into the wall. Its awesome she asked because it was not that hard and the end result is amazing.

Final Thoughts

Finally, I want to say that is not an exact science, it’s doing a little bit of research and going with your gut and understanding that you are dealing with human beings, not robots so they might not always get it right great renovators are the ones that fix mistakes without fuss.

Kitchen Renovations

We are now offering kitchen renovations and kitchen tiling to many of our clients in rural NSW. Below are some kitchen renovations and kitchens we have completed in Glen Innes, Armidale, Lismore, Grafton and Inverell with many more kitchen projects on the way.

Glen Innes Kitchen Renovation

What I love about this Glen Innes kitchen renovation is the bold choice the client took by going a colour.

Using colour for your new kitchen is not always the easiest move to make but the best part of this Glen Innes kitchen is they keep the bold colour low, the mid-level tie-in eye-catching but not overwhelming and they took the neutral white to the top

Perfect from start to finish.

Glen Innes Kitchens

Armidale Kitchen Renovation

Opposite to the above kitchen renovation, this Armidale Kitchen uses dark oak as the feature matching in the lovely marble look splashback that matches into the benchtop

What I love about this Armidale kitchen renovation is even though its small it has tons of storage.

Lismore Kitchen Renovation

More your classic modern kitchen if that makes any sense this Lismore Kitchen Renovation goes fairly neutral in both its gloss white cupboards, subway tiling splashback and stone white benchtops

Kitchen Splashback Tiling Inverell

Grafton Kitchen Renovation

Really BOLD is how I would describe this Grafton Kitchen Renovation. Using mostly dark textures and finishes the way this Grafton kitchen is broken up is using a light oak laminate for the over heads.

With plenty of light, dark kitchens can still look stunning and more so in-person

Inverell Kitchen Renovation

Finally, we have the Inverell kitchen renovation below using light okay base cupboards combined with white to create that scandi-style kitchen design.

Modern Kitchen Splashback Ideas

Kitchen splashbacks in 2024 and 2025 are going to be bold and calming but be careful as the wrong kitchen splashback can really ruin your kitchen.

My advice when it comes to kitchen splashback tiling is to pick a loud tile if you want to draw attention to the splashback and a soft tile if you want to show off your benchtop.

You did spend a fortune on the benchtop top so why not have that as the feature.

If you are looking for splashback tiling we are happy to help just follow the details on all the kitchen splashback tiling below.

3 Modern Bathrooms That Won’t Date

When you renovate, the fear is that you are spending your hard earned money and you are not quite sure what the result will be.

We become indecisive as we want the bathroom to look great but also not date in a year’s time. We at Dream Bathroom Renovations are here to help you with our quick easy guide on the modern bathrooms that won’t date in a year.

  1. The Terrazzo Look Bathrooms
  2. Subway Bathroom
  3. Marble Bathrooms

The Terrazzo Look Bathroom

Real terrazzo is made of quarts of crushed marble and a few different other products to create a stunning finish. The terrazzo look tiles are the modern timeless trend I am referring to that have a seamless look in comparison to real terrazzo.

The grey terrazzo looks incredible with white walls and feels expensive without being overwhelming.

Our Guyra bathroom project below shows you how timeless this style of bathroom can be.

What I love about this bathroom and the tiles themselves is because they are patterned you can hide all the hair it also can be paired with pretty much anything being a cold-tone finish.

These tiles are the Stirling Grey Terrazzo Look Tile from Tile Cloud paired with their matt white Kit Kat tiles.

Subway Bathrooms

Subway bathrooms are exactly as they sound which is the use of smaller tiles laid in a subway or 1/2 Brickbond setup. This style has been around for centuries and paired with a patterned floor like our Inverell Project below or straight colour in the floor you can create a bathroom that won’t date.

An even more modern concept is using the subway tiling but with a contrast grout to create more of a feature.

An example of that is our Armidale ensuite renovation below.

Marble Bathrooms

Marble, or faux marble tiles, will never go out of style. This classic style is timeless. and a style of the bathroom I have been installing for over 20 years.

Our Tenterfield Bathroom Renovation project below shows you how stunning the marble look bathrooms can be.

Tenterfield Bathroom Renovation

Using these timeless Calacatta White Polished 597.0mm x 597.0mm from Beaumont Tiles the bathroom only needed some dark cabinetry to set it off beautifully.

Tenterfield Bathroom Renovation

The downside can be the heavy pattern might be too distracting for you but the rule of tiles is the more pattern the easier it is to clean.

Shower Shelf V Shower Niche

When it comes to deciding what shelving you are going to place in your shower area you will need to make an important decision.

That decision will most likely be between the shower niche and the shower.

Both have their pros and cons but let me guide you below and let you make your decision.

Shower Niche

A shower niche/box/shelf is a practical and stylish vessel for all your necessities. The reason I have used so many slashes is like all parts of renovations different tradesmen have different names for the same actions.

For this though we shall go with the niche as it sounds cooler.

I love the use of brushed copper in our Armidale bathroom below as the niche is more subtle.

The rising popularity of inbuilt shower recesses is due to a few reasons but the number one is the hatred people have had with rusting shower shelves and the cramped nature of too many items sticking out the wall, Who hasn’t banged their head or elbow on a shower soap dish?,

If you haven’t, consider yourself very fortunate.

What I love about this Armidale bathroom renovation below is our sparky used strip lighting in the niche to make it pop and become more a feature with the Kit Kat tiles.

Shower Ledge

The shower ledge or the wall to wall wall which is exactly as the weird title states is a wall that goes between the shower walls or across the entire bathroom. Becoming more popular than the shower niche both due to its size and ability to be used as a feature you will find the shower ledge the most popular shower shelf going into the 2020s and beyond.

The key with this Glen Inness main bathroom renovation below was getting the shower heads right to work with the height of the ledge required.

Glen Innes Bathroom Renovation

Deepwate Bathroom Renovation

The key to getting the heights right and understanding the placement of the items it affects is really crucial and experience-based. Below I’ll give some quick notes to look for when attempting the shower ledge and a link to an alternative to the shower ledge.

These bathrooms we completed in Inverell below took expert tiling to make sure the walls worked perfect in each bathroom.

Inverell Bathroom Renovation

When it comes to deciding which will work for you remember this, shower niches can only go on external walls or if you have enough room they can go in stud walls.

The wall-to-wall shelf can pretty much go in any shower but will affect space, the shower screen and the height of items.
