4 Modern Bathroom Shelving Tips

When I started in this job many a moons ago there was two types of shower shelving. It was the classic soon to be broken ceramic soap dish and then there was the ugly dangerous weird cross between foot rest and roman bath.

Now in the 2020’s we are open to a full range of much better ideas and smarter ways of making your bathroom renovation a much more practical and easy to keep clean space! they are the key words! easier to keep clean. These options below are not the easiest options if you had limited experience in doing them as they take years of doing them to understand the pitfalls and the practical nature of each one so it is always import to get advice from your local tiler or renovator when doing them.

1. Shower Shelf/Recess/Niche

The location of a shower niche is space and use dependent. Shower niches can reduce clutter while adding a new feel and dimension to your shower space. The latest trend is moving away from tubs while creating a larger shower space. Shower caddies are useful but usually, lack aesthetic appeal. Built-in shower wall niches can be as functional as they are striking. Niches can hold a wide range of items, including shampoo bottles and candles for ambience.

2. Nib Wall

Do you ever have that one spot between your shower screen and vanity that you can’t quite get too? For many of our clients, it can be the most frustrating part of their bathroom as a lot of the time poor design and incorrect installation combined with lack of space results in this common issue. This brings us to the Nib Wall or that wall in the shower, that some people referred to it as.

The nib wall is a bricked and tiled wall that goes between the space of the vanity and shower. It is built to the height of the vanity and just slightly short of the width to allow for the shower screen trim in most cases. The reason it is done to the same height is to create a seamless look, often tiling the nib wall in the wall tile so it almost looks invisible. You can build them as high as you like but the purpose we recommend it for is one of being practical not a feature. The nib wall allows for a custom screen to go over and down the wall eliminating the pesky gab previous spoken about.

3. Foot Rest/Low Shelf

A foot rest is designed for shaving your legs, Often you will see people install with only a metal bar across from one wall to the next in a corner. The reality is both options are work the same the only difference is what you can use the bricked foot rest for. The examples used in the bathroom renovations below in Dianella and Southern River WA are both long foot rests built around 300mm high and 600mm wide. The cons of doing something like this is the position of the shower head is effected as you cant stand as close to it.

4. Shower Wall

Exactly as the weird title states, this is a wall that goes between the shower walls or across the entire bathroom. The key to this getting the heights right and understanding the placement of the items it effects. Below I’ll give some quick notes to look for when attempting the wall

The ideal height is around at least 1200mm to 1300mm High

If you can always have the wall mixer in the built wall opposed to above it as it allows for it to be at a reasonable height opposed to an awkward look above.

Remember the wall will affect the mirror if you have it outside the shower area as often you will want to use it as shelving.

Most of the small bathroom renovations we do in regional NSW are not actually that small they just feel small because of how poorly there are currently constructed. Below we will cover 4 ways to make your small bathroom renovation feel like a big bathroom renovations with out the big cost!.

STOP SWINGING

One of the best ways to make that cramped bathroom feel so much bigger is to have less moving parts. In this case the fixed panel shower screen is ideal for that small bathroom renovation that you can not swing a cat. Check out this Stanthorpe bathroom renovation where we have used a walk in fixed panel to open up the space.

GET HIGH

Below is an easy example of a renovation we have completed in Glen Innes NSW where we take away the bricked hob and get the vanity off the floor. The big reason more than anything I love vanity off the floor is the allowance for less lines or walls making the room feel smaller.

Top 4 Cost Considerations For Bathroom Renovations

When it comes to bathroom renovations, there are several reasons to plan your budget carefully. As with renovating any room in your home, costs can run away with you if you don’t keep them in check. offer their top 4 cost considerations if you are contemplating a bathroom renovation project.

Tiling Choices

With literally thousands of tile options on the market today, this may be one of the most exciting yet daunting decisions when it comes to your bathroom renovation. Do you go for classic, neutral tones, or bold, on-trend colours, or perhaps a combination of the two with a feature wall or tile border?.

Floor Height

Are you wanting a thicker floor tile than you currently have? Is underfloor heating a necessity for your new bathroom? When you are choosing flooring, it’s important to consider whether the new height of your bathroom floor will be level with the adjacent room’s floor. If not, you will need to ensure the door threshold is appropriately updated to avoid any nasty trips over an uneven threshold.

Layout

When planning a bathroom renovation on a budget, keeping the layout and placement of the main sanitary ware the same will go a long way to keeping costs in check. Any changes to where items will be placed will have a knock on effect on the associated costs for amending the plumbing for each item. However, if you do need to change the layout to maximise your space, a professional bathroom renovator will be able to advise on the best layout for your bathroom.

Finishing Touches

When planning your bathroom renovation, sometimes the little things can get overlooked. It’s easy to pick the big ticket items like tiles, sinks, toilets and baths, but what about towel rails, taps, mirrors, shower screens and shower heads? By going for economical choices on sanitary ware, you can splash out on some deluxe tap ware, heated towel rails or self-cleaning glass shower screens. These stylish finishes can help to give your new bathroom a luxurious feel, and no one will know you did it on a budget!
